Help! and meet Smokey

Help!

This is Smokey. She is a gorgeous one year old cat.

Isn't she a beautiful colour? A friend at work couldn't keep her, so we agreed to adopt her. She hates me though...well hates a strong word. She doesn't know me and it's her first night here. As you can see she won't come out of her travel cage. Yup, that's food I tried to lure her out with. She just looks so sad and I want her to settle in easily.

So help! How do I help her settle in and feel safe with us?

At the moment I'm just leaving her be, but any other tips and tricks would be greatly appreciated. I've never re-homed a cat before. All ours have been kittens when we got them.

Also...look what we have!

11 baby mice. They're 3 days old now. I love how their markings are starting to show now. Look at the cute little one with a black head and bum and big white belly! Mummy mouse Jasmine is a shiny black mouse and daddy Barnabas is a brown with white band. I can't wait to see how they turn out.

  1. We've rehomed a few :) best thing to do is to leave her alone and let her come out and wander around and explore. She's not going to want much attention for a bit :)

  2. Thanks! So I'm doing the right thing. She just looks so miserable I feel bad.

  3. What a pretty cat! We usually start familiarising our cats with small spaces first such as the laundry, then let them explore more as they feel comfortable. Hope this helps :)

  4. Thanks Vita. I've got her in the kitchen and lounge area...it's not that big. Maybe I should swap her to the study. Our laundry is tiny...barely big enough for a washing machine and sink.

  5. I just went to check on her. She's out of her box...but she's climbed on to the counter and behind the microwave

  6. Ahh babies! I've had a number of cats of all ages and the best thing to do is leave her alone to do her own thing. Leave out food and fresh water and the travel cage. She will come around. Talking to her may help as well. She'll get used to your voice, smell and her new home. One thing: after a day or two sit somewhere that she can see you and dangle a toy or rope. That make bring her around to play a bit. Good luck!

  9. Thanks so much! She's moved to the 'library' my book and polish room that has quite a few things she can jump around on with out touching the floor. She warmed up to me a little to eat some treats and purred. Yay she might like me yet. I need to close off part of the house to her. The mice baby cage has a funny lid, so I need to close their room off to her. Hopefully that'll be ok.
